Beenie Man - Neither here nor there...

"I'm curious to know what you will write about this show", a colleague of mine wrote to me. "What did you think about it?“ I asked. "Not really formidable…" "He tended to be a bit low-key. I won't give another Beenie Man CD to my husband as a present", this comment cam e from Austria. A devastating opinion came from Berlin, "Terrible". The only clement valuation came from Jamaica, "In this conditions, this was a good performance ". Let's just say that it wasn't Beenie Man's night. And to think that it might have been the climax of the Festival. There was to have been a tribute to Michael Jackson, but unfortunately, after a number of delays, the flight from France that was to have brought his band was cancelled and Beenie Man, who was very tired and had just arrived from Africa, had to make do with the support of One Love Hi Powa. Not that the best Italian sound didn't try his best to save the situation, but it was as if something hadn't clicked. This was also due to the fact that the King of Dancehall seemed to have a few problems with his voice and performed the pieces without a clear concept, even resorting to pieces like “Redemption Song” and “No Woman No Cry”, which have been over done. Even the inserted tracks like “The Girl Is Mine” and “Make The World A Better Place” by Michael Jackson, and the tribute to the “ white black man” didn't enthuse the crowd. The performance and the dances of the Jamaican dancer SickNHead didn't make the audience go wild. The only piece that warmed the massive, at least in my area, was a new track called “Gaza mi seh”, and I liked “Gully mi seh”.The public was perhaps too patient and polite to Beenie Man, not really showing their disappointment, but they didn't let themselves go either. At least I hadn't put my new red dress on, it wasn't really the right night for it, but I don't want to discount it completely. I'll give my opinion Jamaican-style; it hadn't been Moses' night, but he still remains a great entertainer and the Michael Jackson of Jamaica.Ellen Köhlings
