Greensplash

green-splash

Every year Sunsplash goes more Greensplash, giving more and more attention to the environment. For the 2011 edition Rototom Sunsplash is going to take even more steps to improve the sustainability of the festival and insure the least possible impact on the environment with the aim of implementing a totally sustainable festival. Thanks to this commitment, Rototom Sunsplash has been recognized in 2009 and 2010 as one of the greener European festivals by A Greener Festival Award organization.

Biodegradable Plastic

After the good results obtained in 2009 and 2010, Rototom keeps proposing the use of biodegradable plastics to all the catering services inside the festival area. These plastics will be made of PLA and other biodegradable materials, like wood and sugar cane, which will be collected together with the organic waste in order to make reusable compost for fertilizers.

Separate Collection of Rubbish

Rototom Sunsplash in coordination with Benicàssim’s City Council will manage the autonomous arrangement of the waste collection. The selective collection will be implemented in a way that will reach the maximum possible quantity of waste for recycling and minimize the non-recyclable rubbish. The selective collection will be enhanced by an Environmental Communication Campaign directed at the public. Then the waste will be selectively collected and adequately delivered to the recycling establishment:

  • Organic
  • Plastics and containers
  • Glass
  • Paper and cardboard
  • Batteries
  • Cooking oil
  • Printer cartridges

Collective Transport/carpooling

The festival organisation has also been encouraging the use of collective transport instead of the private one in order to reduce the environmental impact caused.

Local products - 0Km Water

Rototom Sunsplash adopts practices to promote and privilege local products and infrastuctures in every department, from food and beverage to building materials. Among these, we can find water, which very often travels from very far before arriving to the place of consumption. The water drunk during Rototom Sunsplash 2011 will be AGUA MINERO MEDICINAL DE CATI.

CO2 Compensation

Hundreds of new trees have already been planted, to compensate the CO2 produced from last year's edition and all the income from the parking tickets will cover the creation of new green areas inside the festival area and camping place.

Cooperation with the Master of Energy Efficiency from the University Jaume of Castello

Rototom Sunsplash reached an agreement of collaboration with the Master of Energy Efficiency and Environmental Sustainability in Industrial Plants and Edification from the University of Jaume of Castello'. This new bond will help to develop a project competition aimed at the Master students who, putting in practice the wealth of experience learned during their studies, will contribute to improve the environmental sustainability of the installations of the festival itself.

Sound System by bike at the Free Yard

The energy used to run all the sound equipment of the Free Yard will be generated by a human-powered-machine, called Hamakina. The project is in collaboration with the Roller Disco Bcn team, integrated by various associations and the result is an over 2 kwatts Sound System that allows you to listen up to 4 hours of continuous music without pedaling, fully sustainable and which promotes the participation of the public.

Reduction of the consumption of paper and plastic for advertising

Amongst the policies implemented by the communications department last season:

  • reducing the number of flyers printed for advertising by ensuring paper flyers are shared with other events where ever possible.
  • CD replacement for paper folders / printed brochure supplied to the media.
  • reduction of materials used x packaging cd/dvd produced by the festival
  • use of recycled paper for printing and copying.

Organic food

The festival area includes many different types of organic, local, ethnic, fair trade food and beverages. There will also be a supermarket with organic products in the campsite.

Workshops for children

In the Magicomundo area, expecially dedicated to children, ecology workshops will take be held.

Environmentally friendly vehicles

At the festival area it is forbidden to use motor vehicles, but only bicycles and electric vehicles.
Besides, a Green Car Parade has been organized, an exhibition of sustainable vehicles, in collaboration with the Secondary School “Serra d’Espadà” of Onda (Castellón).
