Greensplash

green-splashEvery year Sunsplash becomes mores Greensplash, meaning the festival pays more and more attention to the environment. For the 2010 edition Rototom Sunsplash is going to take even more steps to improve the sustainability of the festival and insure the least possible impact on the environment with the aim of implementing a totally sustainable festival.

Sustainable Stage

One of the stages at Sunsplash 2010 will be completely autonomous and have its own sustainable supply of electricity (renewable). The Lion Stage is built in collaboration with Ecoluce Tecnologie. The system consists of solar panels which convert solar energy into electricicty, gathering into specially designed electrical accumulators. In addition, all structures and elements of the self contained stage have been created to maximize efficiency and minimize environmental impact.

bio2Biodegradable Plastic

After the good results obtained in the experiments carried out in 2009, Rototom extends the use of biodegradable plastics to all the catering services inside the festival premises. These plastics will be made of Mater Bi and other biodegradable materials, which will be collected together with the organic waste in order to make reusable compost for fertilizer.

WHAT IS MATER-BI®?

Biodegradable and naturally compostable, Mater-Bi ® is an innovative family of bio-plastics which use vegetable components, such as cornstarch, and biodegradable polymers obtained both from renewable raw materials.

Selective Collection

Rototom Sunsplash in coordination with Benicàssim’s City Council will manage the autonomous arrangement of the waste collection. The selective collection will be implemented in a way that will reach the maximum possible quantity of waste for recycling and minimize the non-recyclable rubbish. The selective collection will be enhanced by an ambient communication campaign directed at the public. Then the waste will be selectively collected and adequately delivered to the recycling establishment:

 Organic and Mater Bi

 Plastics and containers

 Glass

 Paper and cardboard

 Batteries

 Cooking oil

 Printer cartridges

There will be information and waste collection points with personnel ready to inform the public about the separation of rubbish.

Collective Transport/carpooling, auto stop

The festival organisation has also been encouraging the use of collective transport as much as possible instead of the private transport in order to reduce the environmental impact caused by the use of the private means of transport.

Local products - Water 0km away

Rototom Sunsplash adopts practices to promote and privilege local product and infrastuctures in every department, from food and beverage to building materials. Among these, this year year we can find water, a necessity, which very often travels from very far before arriving to the place of consumption. The water drunk during Rototom Sunsplash 2010 will be: "L'AVELLA" AGUA MINERO MEDICINAL DE CATI and "AGUA DE BEJIS".

Reduction in the consumption of paper and plastic for advertising

Amongst the policies implemented by the communications department last season:- reducing the number of flyers printed for advertising by ensuring paper flyers are shared with other events where ever possible. -CD replacement for paper folders / printed brochure supplied to the media. -reduction of materials used x packaging cddvd products from festival-using recycled paper for printing and copying.

CO2 Compensation (pilot scheme)

For the 2010 edition, Rototom Sunsplash promotes an experimental pilot carbon off-setting scheme with the CO2 (responsible for the global warming and the environmental changes) emitted by the event organisation through trees planting, by dedicating to CO2 compensation part of the bus service  Barcelona a Benicàssim from Barcelona to Benicàssim organized by Flippa.es and part of the income from the parking. Moreover Rototom Sunsplash promotes actions to reduce the emission generated by the public (responsible of the 90% of the total emissions of the event), for example promoting public transport. The value of this action is not only related to carbon dioxide absorption but it also generates new forests (and the subsequent biodiversity) complete with oxygen and soil.

Organic food

The festival area includes many different types of organic, local, ethnic, fair trade food and beverage,. Into camping are there will be  a supermaket with organic and ecologic products.

Workshop for children

Into Magico Gioco area, expecially dedicated to children, will take place ecology oriented workshops.

Environmentally friendly vehicles

Into the festival area it is forbidden to use motor vehicles, but only bicycles and electric vehicles.

A Greener Festival Award

After the award assigned in 2009 (among best 15 green festivals in Europe), once again this year Rototom Sunsplash will participate in the prestigious European Award Scheme entitled ‘A Greener Festival Award’, which honors those European festivals paying more attention and respect to the environment.
