For the second year Rototom Sunsplash will host the Trenchtown Reading Centre. The association is a non-profit, no fee, Community Library, Reading Room & Education Centre located in Kingston’s ghetto enclave, a community polarized by persistent poverty and local tribal politics.

Started in 1993, the project serves the cause of providing otherwise unobtainable learning material, whilst offering a spacious and comfortable place for community activities and meetings and it relies entirely on donations for it’s upkeep and operation. Its main aim is to find a path forward out of the cycle of violence and lack of opportunity. The principal focus of the Centre is on literacy, running programs for both adults and children, given the high rate of illiteracy in the area. In addition to this the Centre provides a wide range of educational activities including storytelling, homework support, creative arts, culture, health, parenting and employment advice, drama, poetry, learning games and even a Summer school.

At Rototom you will be able to view a beautiful photo display and browse through the interesting info material of the Centre’s activities. In addition to this people will be able to contribute to the fund raising, that will help the association spread their word and cover some of the costs of the project.
