Gathering academics, artistes, producers and general public.
Since 2007, the Reggae University is one of the pillars of the cultural programme of Rototom Sunsplash. Well-known journalists, writers, academics, as well as professionals and artists of the reggae industry, get together in a series of meetings, to reason about, discuss and analyze different aspects and important moments of reggae music and culture.
The sessions focus on the past, the present and the future of reggae, to explore the evolution of this genre, but also its global nature as one of most influential contemporary music styles, which is grounded in a very rich cultural heritage. The University session deal various topics, ranging from the diverse music repertoire, to lyrical contents, emancipatory, political and social aspects, spiritual deepness, but also the cultural manifestation through films and books.
The collective in charge of the sessions is formed by David Katz, biographer of Lee "Scratch" Perry, author of "Solid Foundation: An Oral History of Reggae", creative consultant for various reggae labels; Ellen Koehlings and Pete Lilly, editors of the German Riddim Magazine; Pier Tosi, Italian journalist who runs a radio-show that is a benchmark for the Italian reggae massive.
