Here comes another big return to the Rototom Sunsplash! Ken Boothe is one of the most extraordinary singers of the history of Jamaican reggae. He began singing at an early age in a duet with Stranger Cole in the days of ska, doing great songs like “Artibella”, “World’s fair”, “Hush” and “All your friends”.
Once moving from ska to rocksteady, Ken’s warm and deep soul vein came out recording special material for Studio One amongst which there were songs like “The train is coming”, I don’t want to see you cry”, “Puppet on a string” and “Moving away”. His most acclaimed success came in 1974 with “Everything I own”. This theme’s popularity was expanded to the borders of the reggae enthusiasts and even managed to stay ahead of the British pop charts in the same year.
In 1975, Ken Boothe returned to the top of the pop charts in the UK thanks to “Crying over you” which reached the eleventh position. As evidenced by the documentary “Rocksteady: the roots of reggae”, Ken’s voice has stayed unaltered to this day!
