Vandana Shiva raises her voice to ask for a change of energetic model

vandanaNuclear energy has been the key of yesterday's debate, held at the Foro Social of Rototom, and leaded by the one who - as The Guardian believes - is one of the most important and influent women of the world: Vandana Shiva. Nuclear phisician, environmentalis and a symbol for modern ecologism, this Indian warrior insisted, in front od a numerous public, on the need of a radical change of the current energetic model, in favour of another one leaving nuclear energy apart and investing on the renewable ones.

During this debate - moderated by the journalist Rosa Maria Calaf - Shiva was accompanied by Carlos Bravo, the person in charge of the energetic themes of Greenpeace. From his point of view, nuclear energy turned out to be a "total fail" from the tecnologic, economic, environmental and social points of view. In Bravo's opinion, Fukushima, Chernobil and many other nuclear accidents happened in the world, demonstrated "radioactivity hasn't got any border", so he believes eliminating nuclear energy - main obstacle for the devolopment of renewable energies - is a matter of political will.
Vandana Shiva explained while the average circle of life of a nuclear central is of 20 years, 240.000 years are needed to dispose of its wastes, and she confirmed no other factory will be allowed to cause such a huge damage to the environment. "Saying that nuclear energy is clean, cheap and safe means lying", finishes the Indian environmentalist.
At the same time, Shiva has introduced the parallelism between nuclear energy and Genetically Modified Organisms, criticizeing in both the cases a "lack of responsibility" that comes from the pollution of the planet, the relationships established between "corrupted" companies and the insistence on the models that would never be able to work in an ecologically sustaibable world. "In India we say that if what we would like to do will benefit  the seventh generation, we will do it. If not, there's no reason to do it", finished Shiva to show her position toward nuclear energy. She finally appealed for the need moving "mother nature" the the foreground, and cooperate with it to create this energy.
